Spellman Varsity now 6 and 1 in league play

Posted Tuesday, May 01, 2007 by Daniel Crane

Victoria LaPorte in her first league start held on for 5 innings, giving up one run and no hits and collected 7 K's, but had some trouble in the sixth. In the sixth, a tired LaPorte gave up her only two hits and then walked the third batter. The game was then turned over to Janine Varela. By the end of the top of the sixth, Spellman was down 5 to 3 with the meat of the Spellman order coming up.
Nicole Biolsi with one out was H.B.P. and then stole second. Karissa Lando with two outs and Biolsi on second hit a double down the left field line. That was then followed by Janine Varela who hit a triple to left center tying the game at 5.
In the top of the seventh, after getting the first batter out, Varela gave up a single to the Good Counsel #1 batter who then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Varela then got the #2 hitter to ground out to third and then the dangerous #3 hitter to pop out to short.
In the bottom of the seventh (top of the order) Frances Trosa walked and stole second, Victoria Galasso got a bunt hit and advanced Frances to third. Ponce then laid down a bunt single with the run not scoring. With the bases loaded, Catrina Kostelas then came to bat and hit a ground ball F/C, which scored the winning run. Game Over.
