Spellman beats NDA in first round of crossover playoffs

Posted Thursday, May 17, 2007 by Daniel Crane
After taking a quick 4 run lead in the first game vs. NDA , then letting them back in by giving up 3. The lightning and the rain canceled the game.
On day two NDA came to play. They quickly got off to a 1 run lead ,when Staten Island Player of the Year #15 Olsen hit a double, was bunted to third. The next hitter was struckout by Janine Varela and Spellman was one out away from closing them down when on a missed pitch NDA got a single which scored there only run of the day.
For the next four innings both teams offences were shut down and it looked at this point that the Softball Gods were not with us. Then came the bottom of the fifth, with two outs our #9 hitter Sofia Ponce (who is really a #4 or 5 hitter) showed the meaning of hustle by beating out an infield grounder starting the rally. Frances Trosa then came up and hit a double to right, followed by Victoria Galasso who with guts and focus would not be struck out and got a big walk. With the bases loaded our #3 hitter Catrina Kostelas slammed a screamer down the left field line bringing in the tying and go ahead runs. Then with Kostelas on 1st and Galasso on 3rd, Catrina got into a "Pickle" allowing Vicky to score.
In the top of the sixth with 1 out NDA got a runner on with a error. The next hitter bunted her over to second and the next hitter walked, bring up Player of the Year Olsen. Olsen was then intentionally walk loading the bases. The following batter hit a towering pop up down the left field line which looked as if it may drop in, but Victoria Galasso ran it down closing out the sixth. NDA was shut down the rest of the way giving Spellman the win.
The Spellman Team never quiting hung in and rallied at the right time refusing to lose.
