Spellman 3, NDA 1

Notre Dame had a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Allaire O'Connor's single scored Ashley Olsen, but the Gators couldn't hold on.

Starter Renne Basile (three hits allowed and no walks through four innings) and the Gator defense did a splendid job of holding Spellman down early.

Michelle Landi made a great running catch in left field in the first inning and centerfielder Caroline Jastremski robbed Sophia Ponce of an extra-base hit with two on and two out in the fifth.

"We did do a good job defensively," said NDA coach Tony Curatolo. "The entire game, I don't even think we made an error."

Spellman broke through in the fifth inning, beginning with Ponce's two-out infield hit. That was followed by a single and a walk to load the bases. Catrina Kosteras laced a two-RBI single down the left-field line for a 2-1 Spellman lead.

The Falcons scored again as the runners at the corners attempted a double steal. Olsen threw to second, but her throw hit the baserunner, Kosteras, and allowed Victoria Galasso to score, beating the throw from centerfield. Kosteras was cut down by Olsen trying to advance to third.

NDA rallied in the top of the sixth, getting the tying runs on base after Landi reched on an error and Kate Tierney walked. That brought Olsen to the plate, but Spellman wasn't about to give her a chance, instead opting for the intentional pass.

"That was a good idea," said Curatolo. "I probably would have made the same move.

Mallory Scerbo came up, but was robbed of a bloop hit by Spellman shortstop Galasso, who made a running backhanded catch in short left field.

"That girl made a great play going back on the ball Mallory hit," said the coach. "It was a good game. (Spellman) made the plays they had to make and got the hits they needed."
