Posted Monday, April 07, 2008 by Daniel Crane
Spellman varsity softball team opened the 2008 regular season with a 3 to 2 win over Our Lady of Victory, it was the first varsity game played on the new turf field.
Janine Varela pitched a complete game and picked up her first win of the year.
Spellman fell behind early in the 3rd inning when O.L.V. with bases loaded and one out scored only 1 run when Trosa grabed a line drive for the 2nd out and Kostelas pull in a pop out for the third. Spellman then tied it up in the forth when Kostelas hit a tremendous double to center driving in Ponce. O.L.V. then scored again in the top of the fifth giving them the lead for the second time. Spellman answered the call in the bottom of the sixth with Kostelas hitting another double down the line driving in Trosa and Ponce to take the lead. Varela then held O.L.V. to 1 base hit in the seventh giving Spellman the win.
Backing up Janine on the defensive side were Franny Trosa getting 8 put-outs, Catrina Kostelas with 3 P/Os and 2 assist, Linda McCaffrey with 2 P/Os and Alex Tunjian with 7 assist at first.
On the offensive side Spellman had just enough with Biolsi going 1 for 3, Trosa going 1 for 3 and scoring 1, Ponce going 2 for 3 scoring 2 including the winning run and Kostelas going 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and recording all three RBI's.
