Spellman still in playoff hunt!

Posted Thursday, May 01, 2008 by Daniel Crane

Cardinal Spellman varsity softball kept their hopes of making the playoffs alive with a 4 - 2 win over Good Councel Academy.Last minute adjustments put McCaffrey on the mound, Varela on second, Biolsi in left and Sara Brady with her first start at first base. Spellman playing with the skeleton squad because of the Junior Boat Trip would not be denied the victory.
The game was 3 up 3 down until the top of the third when Franie Trosa with 2 outs got on base with a walk then stole second, Catrina Kostelas then got a big Texas Leaguer to drive her in for the first run of the game. GCA threatened in the bottom of the inning when a bunt hit and a 2 base error put a runner on third with one out. GCA then tried to squeeze, but Linda McCaffrey fielded the ball, looked the runner back and threw to Janine Varela at first who then threw back to Cory Seigel at home to record a 1 - 4 - 2 double play to end the inning. GCA scored one in the forth to tie the game at one. In the 5th, both teams went 3 and out, but in the sixth with one out Catrina Kostelas hit another Texas Leaguer for a double and 1 base error. Lauren Carew then bunted and stole second. Sara Brady got hit by the pitch leaving bases loaded with one out. Jasmin Figueroa then was down 0 & 2 when she hit a screamer down the line to knock in the go ahead run. Kim Biolsi then bunted the squeeze with Carew scoring and Siegel getting a hit to right putting Spellman up 4 to 1. In the bottom of the seventh, GCA threatened with bases loaded and driving in one run, but McCaffrey took the last hit of the game threw to first and walked off the field with a big win. GREAT JOB GIRLS!
