Spellman Beats Maria Regina

Posted Sunday, April 26, 2009 by Daniel Crane
It looked like it was going to be a long day for the Spellman Varsity, going down 1 to nothing in the first and then in the top of the second Maria with one out had runners on 2nd and 3rd ready to score. The #8 hitter stepped up and hit a laser to right field where Senior Linda (Skates) McCaffrey tracked it down with a  great catch and throw to double up the runner on second, killing the Maria rally and giving Spellman momentum. In the bottom of the inning Lauren Carew  hit a single and then stole second. Two batters later,Monica Muffoletto came to the plate and drove in Spellman's first run. Maria then scored again in the fourth putting Spellman behind once again. In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Victoria (Quiny) Quinones, with one out, hit a long triple down the line and then scored two batters latter when Corey (Mickey) Siegel single to left. In the Bottom of the fifth Spellman had the top of the order up with Kimmy Biolsi leading off with a double, then Franny Trosa moving Kim to third with a single to left, Trosa then stole second putting runners on second and third. Alex Tunjian then came up with one out and hit a little squiber to the pitcher drivng in what would be the winning run. Freshman (Quiny) Quinones then came up and drove in a insurance run with a single to left. All Spellman had to do at this point was hold on for the win, but in the top of seventh Maria would not go down without a fight. Maria's #7 hitter led off with a single, got to second and tried to steal third but she was gunned down by Correy Siegel the next hitter then hit a long double to right center. The #9 then came up and popped out to center all Spellman needed was one out! Marias # 1 hitter then came up and hit a single to left advancing the runner to third, With runners on first and third Maria tried to steal second. Correy Siegel, instead of throwing to second, caught the runner leaning too far from third and gunned her down for the third out and giving Spellman the win.
