Defense beats Maria Regina

Posted Friday, May 15, 2009 by Daniel Crane
While it might have looked like the Spellman varsity's offense had fallen asleep for the first five innings vs. Maria Regina, it is clear their defense DID NOT!  In the bottom of the 1st inning, Maria's second hittier got on base with a single, then with their big #3 hitter up, Maria tried a hit and run, with a hard line drive heading for right field.  Monica Muffoletto snagged it in the air and tagged the runner for a double play. In the bottom of the second, Maria's first 2 batters hit singles, then the next hitter hit a hard grounder to Franny Trosa, who threw to Muffoletto at second, who then threw to first for the second double play in 2 innings. The next batter grounded to first. In the bottom of the third, Maria's #8 hitter K/O, then the #9 hitter walked and moved to second when the #1 hitter had a bunt single. The #2 hitter then hit a hard grounder down third where Victoria (Quiney) Quinones snagged it, ran to third for 1 and then threw to first, recording the third out! Three double plays in three innings! Maria then scored one in the fifth, putting Spellman down 1 to nothing. As you can imagine, it could have been alot worse.
In the top of the sixth, with Spellman trailing, we had the top of the order up, With one out, Franny Trosa hit a single, Sofia Ponce then got hit by a pitch. That was followed by freshman, Quiney Quinones, hitting a big double, driving in Trosa. With runners on second and third, Alex Tunjian hit a double, scoring 2 more. That was followed by Lauren Carew driving in another, Corey Siegel then singled and Linda McCaffrey then doubled in two more. Spellman ended the inning leading 6 to 1. Maria Regina never threatened again and the game ended  with Spellman winning 6 to 1.
