Varsity defeats Maria Regina 11 -3

Posted Tuesday, April 13, 2010 by Daniel Crane
Spellman varsity defeated rival Maria Regina in six innings by the score of 11 to 3.
After the first inning, Spellman had a slight lead of 1 to 0. Maria Regina then came up in the top of the second and tied it up with an unearned run. In the bottom of the second, Spellman sent 11 to the plate and scored 7 runs with what seemed like an endless stream of doubles and walks. Julia Blasl and Olivia O'Farrell lead off the inning with back to back walks, that were then driven in by Christine "Sissy" Quinones with a double. Sissy was then driven in by Laura "Ginger" McCaffrey with another double, then with one out, she was knocked in by Monica Muffoletto with a double. Muffoletto was hit in by Victoria "Quinny" Quinones with yet another double, Victoria was then knocked in by Tiffany Rondon's first home run of the year. Spellman then sent 2 more to the plate and the inning was over with Spellman leading 8 to 1. Maria threatened in the top of the 4th  when, with one on and one out, the D.H. hit a double up the right field alley where Jo-Marie Aquino tracked it down and relayed to Monica Muffoletto, who threw it home to gun down the lead runner! Malaya Lambert then threw it to Victoria Quinones, who completed the double play at third, kiliing the threat and ending the inning. Maria Regina scored two in the top of the sixth to bring the score to 8 to 3, but in the bottom of the sixth, Spellman scored 3 runs to bring the score to 11 to 3 thereby putting the mercy rule in effect and ending the game. Great job girls!
