Varsity takes third in a row by one!

Posted Friday, April 30, 2010 by Daniel Crane
Spellman's Varsity Softball Team won their last three games by a total of three runs, but as good as that may sound,it comes at a high cost with injuries to several of of our  key players. Starting pitcher Tiffany Rondon (sprained leg) lost to an illegal play by a player from Good Council. Victoria Quinones (injured shoulder) lost  in a collision with her own teamate, not to mention injured  thumbs for Cyre Dalmau and Olivia O'Farrill on their glove hands.

As bad as all of that may sound, in our first game of the week against Our Lady of Victory, Spellman was down 4-0 going into the last inning when they had a rally of singles and doubles to score 5 runs in the top of the seventh. They then held off a late rally by Our Lady of Victory, with 3 on, only tp be closed out by Tiffany Rondon who struck out the last batter.
Final score Spellman 5- OLV 4.

The next day Spellman faced Good Council where the game was tied in the top of the fourth when Spellman lost their starting pitcher to an illegal play by a Good Council player. In addition, in the 6th inning, Spellman's best hitter was injured  in a collision with the catcher. In the top of the 6th, Spellman was down 5-4. Despite losing two of our top players, Spellman rallied in the bottom of the 6th to score 4 runs to take an 8-5 lead. In the top of the 7th, Good Council rallied to score 2 and with bases loaded, hit a ground ball to Antoinette Nesto, who threw to first to close out the game. Final score Spellman 8- Good Council 7.

In the final game of the week, Spellman was down to the third string pitcher, along with bringing only 10 players to the game against St. Catherine's. Olivia O'Farrill stepped up to play catcher, never having played the position before, along with several other players who played positions that they have not played before. ( Jo Marie Aquino on 1st base, Stephanie Amaya in right field, Cyre Dalmau playing 3rd base) These players helped keep St. Catherine's at bay, while Spellman ended the game with a rally ending double play by Kristin Carew, with a throw from center field to first base. Final score Spellman 8- St. Catherine's 7.
